Composition B (Comp B)

Composition B (Comp B) is a high-performance, melt-castable explosive composed primarily of RDX and TNT with a small amount of wax added as a desensitizer. It appears as yellow to brown grains or a solid cast material and has been widely used as a main explosive filling in military munitions.

Key Characteristics:

Typical Composition:
• ~59.5% RDX (C3H6N6O6)
• ~39.5% TNT (C7H5N3O6)
• ~1% paraffin wax (desensitizing agent)

Description: A castable explosive with high detonation performance, typically exhibiting a detonation velocity of approximately 8,480–8,750 m/s and a density around 1.70 g/cm3. The material is yellow-brown in color and solid when cast.

Primary Uses:

  • Military Munitions: Used extensively as a main filling in artillery shells, rockets, hand grenades, and land mines.
  • Historical Applications: Employed in earlier generations of military systems, including as a main explosive charge in early nuclear weapon designs.

Composition B is valued for combining the high energy of RDX with the melt-cast processability of TNT, resulting in a powerful yet comparatively manageable explosive formulation.
