Amorphous Boron

Amorphous boron (B) is a high-energy fuel and pyrotechnic initiator used to produce intense green flames in flares and signal devices. It is valued for its high combustion energy and reactivity at elevated temperatures.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: B (pure element, typically amorphous boron powder)

Description: A dark brown or black, non-crystalline powder appearing as an amorphous metalloid. It becomes highly reactive at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for pyrotechnic and propulsion applications.

Primary Uses:

  • Pyrotechnics: Used in green-colored flares, fireworks, and signal devices due to its high energy output and contribution to vivid green flames.
  • Rocket Propellants: Acts as an igniter in rocket systems, enhancing ignition reliability.
  • Stabilizing Agent: Prevents harmful amide-forming reactions between aluminum and nitrates in pyrotechnic mixtures.
  • Other Applications: Used in boron-coated igniter wires, specialized alloys, and energetic formulations.

While amorphous boron serves as the energetic fuel, compounds such as barium nitrate are commonly used alongside it to generate the characteristic green light in pyrotechnic compositions.
