Lead Styphnate

Lead Styphnate is a highly sensitive primary explosive, typically appearing as orange-yellow to brown crystalline material. It is used primarily as a priming agent in ammunition and detonators, where it serves to ignite less sensitive secondary explosives. The compound is sensitive to shock, friction, and heat.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: C6HN3O8Pb or PbC6HN3O8 (Lead 2,4,6-trinitroresorcinate)

Description: Orange-yellow to reddish-brown crystals, commonly supplied wetted with water or alcohol to improve handling safety. Lead styphnate is a sensitive initiating (primary) explosive and is only slightly soluble in water.

Uses: Extensively used in non-corrosive percussion primers, stab-initiated devices, and detonators for commercial and military ammunition applications.

Handling & Safety: Extremely sensitive to ignition, especially when dry. It must be handled, stored, and transported under controlled conditions using appropriate safety protocols.
