Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Grenades

Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) grenades are non-lethal riot control devices that use a plant-derived inflammatory agent extracted from hot peppers. The active ingredient, capsaicinoids, causes immediate sensory and inflammatory reactions including intense eye irritation, involuntary eye closure, burning sensations, coughing, and temporary blindness. These grenades are widely used by law enforcement agencies for rapid crowd control and dispersal.

Chemical and Description:

Active Components: Capsaicinoids including Capsaicin, Dihydrocapsaicin, and Nordihydrocapsaicin.

Source: Extracted from plants of the Capsicum genus (chili peppers).

Form: In pyrotechnic grenades, OC is dispersed as a fine powder or aerosol cloud that causes intense irritation upon contact with the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.

Mechanism: OC functions primarily as an inflammatory agent, inducing severe irritation of mucous membranes and nerve endings. This leads to intense burning sensations, eye closure, and respiratory discomfort, temporarily incapacitating exposed individuals.

Use and Effects:

  • Purpose: Used by law enforcement and security forces for crowd control, riot management, and temporary incapacitation of individuals.
  • Effects: Intense eye pain, tearing, involuntary eye closure, coughing, breathing difficulty, skin irritation, and temporary blindness.
  • Duration: Symptoms typically last between 15–30 minutes and gradually subside once the affected person is moved to fresh air and exposure stops.
  • Advantages: Being plant-derived, OC is often considered a more environmentally friendly alternative compared to traditional CN or CS tear gas agents.

Disclaimer: Although classified as non-lethal, improper use or excessive exposure to OC agents may cause serious injury or health complications. Proper handling and operational guidelines must be followed.
