Pralay Missile Solid Propellant Motor

The Pralay tactical ballistic missile utilizes a high-energy solid propellant motor designed to deliver rapid response, high thrust, and reliable performance. The propulsion system is based on a composite propellant mixture consisting of oxidizers, metallic fuels, energetic compounds, and a polymer binder. These components are combined to produce sustained combustion and powerful thrust suitable for short-range ballistic missile operations.

Chemical Components & Description:

Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) – NH4ClO4: Primary crystalline oxidizer that supplies oxygen during combustion, enabling efficient burning of the propellant mixture.

Aluminium Powder (Al): A high-energy metallic fuel that significantly increases combustion temperature and improves overall thrust and energy output.

RDX / HMX: Energetic nitramine compounds used to increase propellant density and enhance performance characteristics such as burn rate and energy release.

HTPB Binder (Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene): A synthetic rubber binder that holds the propellant components together while also acting as a secondary fuel. It provides mechanical strength and flexibility to the solid propellant grain.

Use and Processing:

Use: The solid propellant is cast directly inside the missile motor casing where it remains throughout the missile’s operational life. During launch, the propellant burns in a controlled manner, generating high-temperature gases that are expelled through the nozzle to produce thrust.

Processing: The oxidizer, metallic fuel, energetic additives, and binder are mixed to form a viscous slurry. This mixture is then cast into the motor casing in a specific grain geometry (often star-shaped or multi-perforated) to regulate the burning surface area. The propellant is subsequently cured at elevated temperatures to form a durable, uniform, rubber-like solid propellant grain.

Operational Advantages:
High energy density, reliable ignition, long-term storage stability, and the ability to deliver sustained thrust make composite solid propellant motors ideal for tactical ballistic missile systems.
